BURLE MARX IN MIAMI
In 1988 the New World Foundation commissioned world renowned
artist and landscape designer Roberto Burle Marx to design an iconic
art installation for Miami’s signature roadway, Biscayne Boulevard.
Over the next 20 years the design was progressively installed as property
and roadway improvements occurred. Recently the Biscayne Boulevard –
New World Design was substantially completed along a contiguous stretch
of Biscayne Boulevard from SE 2 Street to NE 13 Street.
Ambassador Luiz Augusto de Araujo Castro, representatives of Rio de Janeiro’s
Mayor, Miami Dade College’s representatives and CCBU members joined City of
Miami Mayor Manny Diaz at the Freedom Tower to listen to Lauro Cavalcanti, director
of Rio de Janeiro’s museum Paço Imperial and curator of the Burle Marx’s retrospective
exhibit, lecture about the life and work of that extraordinary artist and a reception.
After the reception, the inauguration took place at the sidewalk where Mayor Diaz unveiled a commemorative bronze plaque. The celebration continued at the American Airlines Arena’s east plaza with a concert by the “carioca” group Bossacucanova, under a full moon.
